My Ukraine
By Vita K., 13 years old
I arrived to “Fiodor” from the settlement Zdolbunova in Ukraine, and now I will go to my grandmother in the village Bogdashev. The climate in Ukraine is warm: it’s hot in the summertime, the spring starts early, and the winter is short but with snow. There are a lot of fruits in the gardens: cherries, apples, plums, walnuts and pears. It’s warm through most of the fall. People live in huts which are painted white as well inside as outside. Inside there are woven carpets on the walls and mats of very beautiful colors at the floor. On holidays people wear national costumes. My sister has such one: a garland with colored ribbons; a long, white and embroidered shirt with wide sleeves; a dark skirt with a colored pattern; and an embroidered jacket. Besides, she wears beautiful top-boots. People wear the national costumes for weddings, for Christmas and during “the pancake week” and other holidays. Young people like to walk from hut to hut and sing Christmas carols and dance in a circle in the courtyards. Afterwards the people living in the huts give them cakes , sweets and “gorilka” which is a special vodka. Where I come from there is a lake Stavok where we can swim . It’s very beautiful at the Black Sea and at Crimea. I’ve been at Crimea, and here I tasted some national dishes: “pampushki” with cottage cheese and jam; “galushki” which is a kind of borsch; “vareniks” which is dumplings with curd or fruit; and “kholodets” which is minced meat in jelly. I understand everything the Ukrainians say, but I don’t know how to write the language. Here in the shelter I’ve a friend, Marina, and I’ve met my love, Lesha. In the future I’ll stay in contact with Marina, and she’ll visit me at my grandmother’s place in Bogdashev where I’m going to stay.
